Facts About Gelatin

Posted on January 02, 2013 by L.D. Davis Industries, Inc

Gelatin is a very important part of L.D. Davis adhesives. Since we started manufacturing protein glue (hide glue), gelatin has been a major raw material aiding in our adhesive manufacturing process.

The gelatin we use in our adhesive manufacturing comes from recycled pharmaceutical and nutritional scrap, either in soft gel netting form or in scrap hard capsules. Not only does this provide us with the natural raw material needed to manufacture our eco-adhesives, this also reduces a large waste stream from the above-mentioned industries.

Use of this raw material not only helps us keep our adhesives eco-friendly (which they are naturally); it also helps us recycle unwanted products from other industries. We like to think of this recycling as a cornerstone of the L.D. Davis Green Advantage.

Some Interesting Facts About Gelatin:

GelatinYou can’t make a synthetic version of gelatin! It is always a naturally-occurring substance. Thanks to gelatin’s spring-like molecular structure, it swells in cold water and dissolves in hot water. However, it always reverts back to its stable state when it is cooled.

Gelatin is used in a wide variety of applications depending on its quality. The food industry uses food-grade gelatin, the photography world uses photographic-grade gelatin, we use technical-grade gelatin in our adhesive manufacturing, etc. Synchronized swimmers sometimes use a gelatin paste to keep their hair in place during competition. The gelatin solution hardens somewhat and will not dissolve until the swimmer subjects him or herself to the hottest shower their head can stand!
