If you manufacture rigid boxes, you know that there are few things more frustrating than when your turn-in pops open. Here are 3 common misconceptions about box pop-opens. Don't worry, we added recommended solutions as well.
This is not the case when it comes to rigid box making. In fact, this is not the case when it comes to packaging glue in general. There is no “one size fits all” glue formula. Several details impact which glue is best for your application including your substrates, your equipment, open-times, glue temperature, etc.
Make sure to discuss your application details with your glue vendor, so you get the best formula for your application.
Don’t fall victim to this one! Applying more glue to your substrates does not result in better adhesion. In fact, applying too much glue could cause issues like warping, excessive squeeze-out, and dirtying of equipment. Not to mention, the more you use the more money you will be spending.
Make sure to consult with your equipment manufacturer to determine the recommended MIL thickness that should be applied. You can measure how much glue you are applying to your substrates with a mil depth gauge.
When it comes down to it, glue is not “smart” enough to work properly on all turn-in's but one. The only reason this would be a glue issue is if the substrates on one edge are different than the others. If some of your wrap edges are popping open and others are not, this is typically the result of a compression issue.
You’ll want to make sure that the same compression is used on all edges. Also, make sure that the glue is not running too cold. If it is too cold, by the time the trailing edge is compressed, the glue may have already set and will not adhere properly.
