If you really want to get the most out of your glue, temperature is a topic you shouldn't ignore. You would be surprised how many equipment, and application issues could be resolved simply by adjusting the temperature of your glue.

Today we'll cover the recommended glue operational temperature of our three major products: protein glue, hot melt glue, and liquid water-based glue. 


IMG_7686.jpgProtein glues (also known as hide glue or animal glue) are biodegradable gelatin-based glues commonly using to make books and boxes. They are typically sold in jelly cakes, which are then liquefied with heat and applied with equipment. 

Protein glues work most efficiently at an operational temperature between 140°F  and 150° F.  Running the glue below this temperature could result in messy equipment and the glue setting a lot quicker than you want. If the glue runs above this temperature, the glue could burn and the formula properties could be compromised. 

The recommended operational temperature of your protein glue can be found on the technical data sheet (TDS) for the product.

hot-melt-pillows.pngHot melt glues are polymer based and are 100% solids, containing no solvents or water. They are also thermoplastic which means they are a solid at room temperature, but liquefy upon heating.

The lack of water and solvents allow hot melts to attain peak bonding strength very quickly. The mechanical bonds they create penetrate the bonding surface prior to solidifying as they cool down. 

The recommended temperature for most standard hot melt glues is 350°F.  If the temperature is not set properly you could experience issues with: pop opens, gelling, charring, smoking, or stringing.  

There are thousands of varying types of hot melt glues on the market, including low-temp and PUR hot melts. Always make sure to refer to the technical data sheet (TDS) for the recommended application temperature.

liquid_water_based_glue.jpgLiquid water-based glues are eco-friendly and non-toxic. They are used in a wide variety of applications and are commonly seen in case and carton sealing, packaging, woodworking, lamination, envelopes and other assembly work.

One major benefit of using liquid water-based glues is that they can be applied at room temperature, making them extremely safe to handle.
